up north blizzard warnings were in effect. oklahoma getting 7 inches of snow all over that state. take a look at that. the weather being blamed for a 21 vehicle pileup on interstate 40. no one was seriously hurt but a woman died in another highway crash nearby. severe weather is moving north. rick is in the weather center tracking the storm. >> what oh storm we got. >> yesterday all of the tornadoes and the snow today we had a repeat of it. the tornado threat i don't think as big as yesterday but it is still there. further off toward the east as the line right here continues to push off toward the east. it is very unstable ahead of it. i will show you that throeat ina second. the blizzard going on near the ohio and mississippi river right there south of paduka. that's the bulls eye. it will continue to go off to

the northeast. anywhere you see this yellow from parts of virginia to central florida could see windy conditions. we could see tornadoes. i think the bullseye of tornadoes is where this moderate risk is across south and north carolina. that will be later on this afternoon. we have blizzard warnings in effect. darker red is blizzards reduce visibility quarter of a mile. 3-6 inches in additional snow around the ped duaducah area. the bullseye will be well over a foot. coastal areas mostly rain. start with a little snow transitioning over to rain. you will be dealing with a lot of snow this evening and all day tomorrow. guys? >> rick, thank you very much. you have been working a lot lately. good information you are giving us. >> those are the top five

stories making news at this hour. a u.s. military base coming under attack in afghanistan. a homicide bomber blowing up a vehicle at camp chapman. it left three afghans dead. the taliban taking responsibility for the attack. the homicide bomber did not make it inside the base. >> investigators combing the scene of that christmas eve ambush where two firefighters died. another victim dead inside of the home. the body believed to be that of the missing sister of the ex-con william stegler. police in wester, new york say her brother set that deadly trap for the first responders a plan he detailed in a chilling note he left behind. new 911 calls have been released. >> multiple fires shot. i am shot.

used an assault rifle. we have multiple firemen down. >> cops say there was no clear motive in the suicide note he left behind ex cement he want-- except he wanted to kill as many people as possible. a doshg worker strike that could set down more than a dozen along the east coast. law americas say if workers strike it would end up costing billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs. that strike could begin as early as sunday after current union contracts expire. more than 14,000 workers that handle 95 percent of the cargo on the east coast are expect to do walk off the job. >> fan me m-- fannie mae and freddie make are taking on high risk loans. the government backed mortgage companies would be allowed to charge higher interest rates in return to guaranteeing loans at risk of defaulting. the proposal would have to be approved congress.

apple released a new product and there will be another new product. >> now that you got them under the christmas tree. a man who has been right predicting apple products before a 5th generation ipad will look like the mini but some what thinner narrower and shorter than a regular ipad so not as small. apple is working on another generation of the ipad mini. it could be two new products. >> we could have just wasted our money at christmastime. >> sales were down from what was expected. >> yeah, the holiday shopping season a disappointment. the first tally on the sales is now in. spending polls said down 2.4 percent worse than 20008 when the economy was in a recession. normal rate would be 4-5 percent. shoppers were affected by the

wallet recovery tool where you register your gift card in the mail if you lose your wallet they will everybodying mail you and tell you how to get the gift cards back. what about returning gifts that you don't want. organize your receipts. >> i do. you want to review store policy. first of all if it was an on-line order find out if that retailer will allow you to return it at the brick and mortar location to save on the return shipping fees. you want to know how long you have. will you have time next week to return it. also organize those receipts. you may be able to use the one receipt app which turns paper receipt into a digital document on the phone. this way you don't have to go through your wallet in the customer service line. it becomes stressful you can't find your receipt. you have it all on your phone and easier to access. >> it was a free app. you say review the policy. >> like i said review the store policies. do they need a veet?

often times there's a little sticker on the tag that the retailer can just scan so you may not even need that receipt. make sure you have enough time to actually return that. if there is a limited window you don't have time to get to the store note it in a calendar or set an alert or reminder on your phone so you don't miss the opportunity to return it. >> take advantage of the sale. >> yes. there is going to be tons of sales going og post holiday. whatever retailers didn't push before the holidays they will be marking them down dramatically. people are going into stores to exchange and return often times end up buying more than they are returning or exchanging. they are going to try to get your sales and dollars. take advantage of coupons. mobile coupon act will give you extra coupons. if you are returning on-line you will be able to exchange it for other times you can get discounts through shipping.org.

knocking down trees ended up killing two people in texas and louisiana. blizzard warnings were in effect. oklahoma got 7 inches of snow all over the state. the weather also being blamed for a 21 vehicle pileup on interstate 40. no one was seriously injured. another did die in another highway crash nearby. severe weather is moving north. we are at the extreme weather center. this looks like a massive wide storm. >> good morning, rick. people possibly trying to travel back home in a big mess in the eastern half of the country. over parts of the far southeast we will see more in the form of severe weather. anywhere from east of atlanta the cold front moved through so things are going to warm up we will show you problems.

york post is saying the punishment for four state department employees who didn't do their jobs are bogus. eric boss well who resigned after a scathing report on the attack only gave up his appointed position not his other duties. he and three other employees put on administrative leave will be allowed back on the job. he was supposed to be reporting the news but david gregory is becoming the news. >> this is a magazine that carries 30 bullets. here is the problem with that. washington, d.c. gun laws say carrying a magazine that holds more than 10 round of magazines is illegal in the district. nbc wasn't commented on the matter yet. >> the man who ran the largest ponzi scheme in american history says the problem with wall

submarines and also test fire missiles. ainsley? >> brace yourselves. a hpotential strike by union workers might stark another recession. diane macedo has the story for us. >> business groups and state officials are calling on president obama to use emergency powers to avoid a coast wide shut down warning that could cost billions of dollars. weeks after a western complex rauz crippled by a strike. that strike is estimated to have cost the u.s. 1 billion a day. this new phonings strike could effect more than 14,000 workers. together they handle 97 percent and could show supply chain across the entire country. the big issue is the labor dispute between the association

which represent staff workers and maritime alliance. the talks between the two broke down december 18th and the union could strike if they can't reach an agreement before the latest contracts expire on december 29th. both sides get to agree on wages the sticking point is container royalties payments to union workers based on cargo rates. they want to cap the royalties at last year's level saying they morphed into a huge expense not relate to do the original purchase and bonus 15,500 a year for those already making more than $50 an hour. the payments are an important supplemental wage not a bone ub. those ranging the automobile industry to retail federation to u.s. commerce it will be

>> you have to run the numbers. are you in the alternative minimum tax rate and you have to really run your numbers and look at 2012 or 2013. you may be a higher bracket in 2013 and may want to take the deductions in 2013 rather than 2012. >> if you want to review the 2012 taxes you say prepaid state income taxes. >> if you pay the state income taxes that may be due next april 159 you have a large capitol gains maybe you sold something you can do that. one of the things you have to keep in mind in doing all of this you have to figure out the alternative minimum tax. there are two systems of taxation. the alternative minimum is a separate one you have to compute. doesn't allow you to conduct military business. you have to run the numbers both ways.
